PARIS AGREEMENT

Image
The world is heating up. We can stick our heads in the sand as much as we want (and   many people   are doing that), but this is happening, and it’s because of us. A mountain of studies and reports have shown that man-made greenhouse gases are the cause for the current heating trends. Without massive changes and reductions in our greenhouse gas emissions, we are set for catastrophic climate change, which will affect not only the environment, but also our economy and even our very livelihoods. We are already seeing these devastating effects all around the world, and things will only get worse if we don’t act. With this in mind, a group of 195 countries (essentially all the countries on Earth) adopted the agreement in 2015 at the COP21 United Nations climate change conference. It is the first-ever universal, (sort of) binding global climate deal, which sets out a global action plan to put the world on track for avoiding the worst effects of global warming. ...

FEW LEGENDS FOR US TO REMEMBER

Image
The Legends of India who contributed to preservation of the Environment. The world is talking about Global Warming, Climate Change, and risks to the future generation. But, the very base of Indian Civilization lies in Sustainable Development. Meet the legends of India who have contributed their lives to Environmental Conservation. 107-year-old Padma Shri  Saalumarada Thimmakka  is known for growing around 385  banyan  trees along a four-kilometer stretch of highway between  Hulikal  and  Kudur . She has been honored with the National Citizen’s Award of India for planting and tending more than 8,000 trees in Karnataka. Padma Shri  Jadav  “Molai” Payeng,  an  environmental  activist from Assam, also popularly known as the  “Forest Man of India”  has planted and tended trees on a  sandbar  of the river  Brahmaputra ,  turning it into a forest reserve. The  ‘ Molai forest ’  locat...

INDIA'S INITIATIVE TO SAVE MOTHER EARTH

Image
United Nations observes a special day to celebrate Mother Earth on 22nd April. Launched in 1970 with 10000 people, today it covers one billion people in 192 countries. The basic objective is to raise awareness about the obligation of human beings to protect Earth and share its resources with future generations. The theme for 2017 is to create “Environment and climate literacy” to empower the knowledge base of common people towards the issue and inspiring them towards actions to defend the Mother Earth. According to IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) India is most vulnerable to the impact of climate change, adversely impacting the health, economic development and food security. In order to address this challenge of climate change, India has evolved a comprehensive plan: ‘India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC): Working towards Climate Justice’. This document addresses the issue holistically including the elements of adaptation, mitigation, finance, gre...

REWILDING

Image
WHAT IS REWILDING? Rewilding is a progressive approach to conservation. It’s about letting nature take care of itself, enabling natural processes to shape land and sea, repair damaged ecosystems and restore degraded landscapes. Through rewilding, wildlife’s natural rhythms create wilder, more biodiverse habitats. REWILDING IS ABOUT : 1. Nature’s own ways: Nature knows best when it comes to survival and self-governance. We can give it a helping hand by creating the right conditions – by removing dykes and dams to free up rivers, by reducing active management of wildlife populations, by allowing natural forest regeneration, and by reintroducing species that have disappeared as a result of man’s actions. Then we should step back and let nature manage itself. 2.Bringing back wildlife : Indian wildlife species have strongly declined, even in our wildest areas. Some of them have even gone extinct, while they play a critically important ecological role. Rewilding works to restore lost species...

ENVIRONMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH

Image
We are all connected to the environment, and because of this our health, including our mental health, can be affected by the environment. The depressing environmental degrading events of the climate crisis and human interaction with the earth will have negative impacts on mental health. For example, you may experience "eco-anxiety", which is about severe anxiety related to humans' relationship with the environment. Constantly hearing about bush fires, flooding, extreme weather, loss of biodiversity and other similar events can cause people to be anxious about this happening to them or others. Or people who have suffered through this, can be anxious that it will happen to them again. However, you can't just experience negative emotions from the environment, as you can experience positive ones too! Evidence continues to grow that suggests that exposure to natural environments can be associated with mental health benefits such as lower levels of stress, reduced symptomol...

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Image
It is our God-given duty to take care of our environment and keep it clean always. With the increase of environmental hazards like water contamination, air pollution, and climate change, it’s important for us to look for ways to reverse the damage that is being done to our planet. The impact of climate change and global warming is being felt in every country and on every continent but we have a part to play to ensure a habitable planet for everyone. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has proclaimed climate change to be the defining challenge of our time. It is a global problem, and yet each of us has the power to make a difference. Even small changes in our lifestyle and behavior can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions which affects the ozone layer while ensuring a good quality of life. This calls for global responsibility to ensure sustainability and global health by doing our very best to keep our environment clean and green.  THE  IMPACT OF WASTE RECYCLING ON SUSTAINABIL...

PAPER RECYCLING

Image
What is Paper Recycling? You’d be more shocked than surprised if you heard someone didn’t know about paper. Well, that’s to show you the big role paper play in our everyday activities. From magazines to personal diaries, we can’t just seem to get enough them. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. And you’ll most likely dispose of these materials once you finish reading. Well, you don’t need to anymore. You can always recycle them and gain loads of benefits. Paper-Recycling-center What is Paper Recycling? Paper recycling pertains to the processes of reprocessing waste paper for reuse. Waste papers are either obtained from paper mill paper scraps, discarded paper materials, and waste paper material discarded after consumer use. Examples of the commonly known papers recycled are old newspapers and magazines. Other forms like corrugated, wrapping, and packaging papers among other types of paper are usually checked for recycling suitability before the process. The papers are collected ...
